An airbag (20) usable to protect the driver of the vehicle has a face panel (22). A rear panel (30) of the same shape as the face panel (22) is secured to the face panel along its periphery. A tether (70) of elongated shape has first and second ends (74, 76) and a center region (78). The center region (78) of the tether (70) is formed into a Z-shaped configuration and secured to the face panel (22) near a geometric center (22a) of the face panel.
