The brake system includes a normal source of pressurised hydraulic brake fluid and a back up source. A brake actuation member is operated by application of pressurised fluid. A valve selectively prevents a flow of the fluid between the back up source and the brake actuation unit. A fluid separator unit maintains an integrity of the back up source. It prevents fluid from the normal source mixing with that from the back up source. The normal source of fluid is allowed to act upon the brake actuation member through a portion of the normal source when the valve is shut.
