PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chair permitting easy assembly of a backrest and having excellent appearance. SOLUTION: The backrest 6 has a backrest frame 14 and a backrest inner shell 15, and a cushion is stretched over the backrest inner shell 15. The backrest frame 14 is rectangular as seen from the front, and the backrest inner shell 15 is attached to a side member 20. The side member 20 of the backrest frame 14 has a front panel 20a and inner and outer side panels 20b and 20c. The backrest inner shell 15 is attached to the front panel 20a. The width in the front/rear direction of the outer side panel 20b is smaller than the width of the inner side panel 20b in the side member 20. With this structure, the backrest 4 is thin at the left and right side ends as a whole, and as a result, the backrest 4 is prevented from having a thick appearance caused by the layered cushioned backrest inner shell 15 on the backrest frame 14.
