<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a digest of a television broadcasting program such as a drama or a movie so as to easily understand its story. <P>SOLUTION: In the device (60A) for generating the digest of the television broadcasting program including caption information, a character calculating section (62) calculates the number of characters of the caption displayed in each fixed time period.
