An adjustable steering column comprises a steering shaft mounted in a body tube arranged in a movable support element, these components not being shown in the figure. The movable support element is locked on a fixed support element 8 by a clamping system 4. The electric clamping device is mounted in a casing 20 which supports an electric motor 70 and comprises a transmission system 80, a locking assembly 10 and a clamping rod 60 mounted in the fixed support element 8. The locking assembly 10 comprises: a fixed cam 30 with fixed raceways, a movable cam 40 with movable raceways, and balls 50. Said balls move along the raceways in the form of a spiral with a disengagement slope, in order to initiate clamping or release according to the direction of rotation.
