<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device which allows a user to select a readout mode for a photoelectric conversion element suitable for face detection process based on the condition of an object. <P>SOLUTION: If a face region cannot be detected from an image generated from image signals output in a first readout mode, it is switched to a second readout mode that allows to obtain the image signals with higher resolution than the first readout mode.
