PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of performing satisfactory image formation by reducing rotation load on an image carrier. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an intermediate transfer belt 2 rotating with an image held thereon; a transfer roller 7 rotating while abutting on the intermediate transfer belt 2 and used to transfer the image formed on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 2 to paper 8; a registration section 103 for conveying the paper 8 to a place where the intermediate transfer belt 2 and the transfer roller 7 abut on each other; and a transfer area gap forming member support member 11 and a transfer area gap forming member 12 which form a gap in the place where the intermediate transfer belt 2 and the transfer roller 7 abut on each other by the thrust of a recording medium, namely the paper 8, which is conveyed by the registration section 103.
