PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of a fixing device which fixes a toner image on the surface of a recording medium by passing the recording medium, with an unfixed toner image held thereon, between a heat roller (pressure roller) and a fixing roller, the problem being such that residual toner may stick to the fixing roller and such sticking matter is removed by a cleaning means, however, insufficient cleaning causes residual toner re-sticks to the pressure roller, the subsequent recording medium, or the like. SOLUTION: When cleaning is carried out using a cleaning web, not only the web is made nearer to and away from the fixing roller, but also an abutting amount (biting amount) is changed according to conditions. When the proportion A (%) of the area of an image to be fixed is≥30%, the maximum abutting amount is given. If it is≤30%, the abutting mount is set according to a value determined by a predetermined fraction of monotonous increase. The abutting amount may be determined by an environmental temperature or a relative humidity. Alternatively, the proportion of the area of an image may be taken into consideration.
