[Also in Division B3] The outer race of a ball bearing is formed from a blank B, which has longitudinal grooves mating on corresponding ridges on a die block 28, the grooves forming raceways for the balls. A reciprocating plunger 40 maintains the blank B in position and an upper die member 44 bends the end portions of the blank to the radius of the finished race. The ends of the blank are cut to length and it is transferred to a forming mandrel 60, the diameter of which equals that of the finished race. The final shaping of the blank B is achieved by a pair of opposed forming dies 64, 66 which have bevelled faces 75 to accommodate the partially withdrawn holder 62 as they approach one another and meet in completing the shaping. |
