Homoisocamphenilanyl alcohol is obtained by reduction of the aldehyde with hydrogen in the presence of platinum oxide according to the equation Its acetate is formed by reaction with acetic anhydride. Mol ratios of (2) : (1) may be 0.1-12 : 1 and of (1) : (3) may be 1 : 0.1-2 using total catalyst concentrations of 0.1-3%. Temperatures of 0-250 DEG C. and pressures of atmospheric to 1000 p.s.i. may be used and hydrogen may be present. Suitable diluents are paraffins, cycloparaffins and aromatic or hydrogenated aromatic or halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, with monomer concentrations of 2-50%. The polymers, having molecular weights of 1,000-250,000, can be spun into fibres having softening points above 200 DEG C., and may be modified by incorporation of poly-acrylates, methacrylates, vinyl pyridines or N-substituted acrylamides as described in Specification 999,721 or polyvinyl acetal resins as described in Specification 999,722.
