A hydrocarbon for separating paper or wood pulp in a liquid suspension into accepted light and rejected heavy fractions comprises a hollow truncated conical portion 10, a tangential liquid suspension inlet 15 at or beyond the base end of the portion 10, a cylindrical extension 18 mounted, at one end thereof, to the apex end of the portion 10 and having, at its opposite end, an attached or integral nozzle 17, means being provided for introducing supplemental liquid into the extension 18 in a direction inclined towards the nozzle 17. The opening 12 is fitted with an outlet pipe 14, for the light suspension fraction, which extends from a vortex finder 13 which is flared at its extremity so as to deflect incoming feed suspension. The cylindrical extension 18 is joined to the apex end of the portion 10 by a rubber or like coupling 31 held by clamps 34 and is either integral with or, as shown, attached to the nozzle 17. Supplemental washing liquid, e.g. water, is introduced through a number of tangential openings 21, 22 at an angle, e.g. 20 degrees, towards the nozzle 17 and in communication with an inlet 36 through a manifold chamber 37. The nozzle 17 may open to atmosphere or be connected to a vacuum space or, as shown, is preferably immersed either directly or through a sight glass 24 in liquid 25 in a tank 26. The rejected suspension fraction issuing from the nozzle 17 flows into the liquid 25. There dirt and unusable fibrous material are dispersed into the liquid while entrained usable fibres are reclaimed in the originating portions of the inner vortex, drawn thereby back into the nozzle and conducted along with other usable fibres towards the vortex finder 13.
