A power or manually operated winch mechanism for handling the running rigging lines of a sailing yacht. The winch Includes a winding drum (11 ), operating in conjunction with a level wind mechanism (12), which winds and stores the line during line retrieving operations and controllably releases the line when desired. During line release, the line is placed under tension by elements (124,125, 130) of the level wind mechanism and thus positively drawn from the unwinding winch drum even when the line is not under load from the sail to which it Is attached. The new winch mechanism preferably includes an alternate arrangement for manual operation of the system in the event of a failure of the power system. |
