A relay and a method for controlling reverse gain in a mobile communications system are provided to improve the communication quality of the mobile terminal by providing reverse direction coverage according to computation of the reverse gain and the calculated reverse gain. An administration modem unit(235) measures signal-noise ratio about a pilot channel provided from a base station. A free space loss calculation unit(237) calculates reverse gain in consideration of the loss of the free space. A controller(238) provides a reverse direction coverage between the mobile communication terminal and the base station by using reverse gain calculated from the free space loss calculating unit .
