PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device using a polarizer having high durability and capable of selecting suitable polarized light. SOLUTION: The optical device has an electro-optical element which modulates luminous flux emitted from a light source according to image information, and the polarizer 42 arranged on the light incident side and/or light outgoing side of the electro-optical element. The polarizer 42 has a polarizer base plate 421 formed of material having light transmittance of 97% or more, and a birefringent portion 422 formed by arranging minute metal convex lines in stripe on the surface of the polarizer base plate. The birefringent portion 422 is provided on the light outgoing side out of two surfaces of the polarizer base plate 421. The birefringent portion 422 is provided with a protective base plate 423 covering the birefringent portion 422. The protective base plate 423 is bonded to the polarizer base plate 421 at the outer peripheral end with an elastic adhesive 424 so that the birefringent portion 422 is sealed and enclosed by the protective base plate 423 and the elastic adhesive 424.
