A combination modem and external memory, a function conversion method thereof and a recording medium in which a program for performing the same is recorded are provided to make the function conversion possible even without pressing buttons several times, thereby simply selecting functions. An external memory is connected through a terminal(100) and a connection terminal(204). A combination modem and external memory(200) comprises a memory unit, a modem unit, a switch(210) and a controller. The memory unit stores user data loaded from the terminal, and the modem unit modulates and demodulates the signals transmitted and received between a communication network and the terminal to generate/output communication data. The switch is equipped at an outer side of the external memory and outputs a conversion signal for activating or inactivating the memory unit and modem unit. The controller receives the conversion signal and activates at least one of the modem unit and memory unit.
