PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium management apparatus capable of preventing free capacity from being lacked caused by writing of new compressed video data during processing for securing capacity of a recording medium.

SOLUTION: The recording medium management apparatus is equipped with: a processing time calculating section 105 for calculating a duration time during which processing for recording new compressed video data on a recording medium can be continued, and a processing time required for increasing free capacity of the recording medium by applying predecided capacity securing processing to compressed video data already recorded on the recording medium; a processing deciding section 107 which decides that the predeided capacity securing processing is to be performed if the processing time is shorter than the duration time, or decides that alternative capacity securing processing that can be performed within a shorter time than the predecided capacity securing processing, is to be performed if the processing time is equal with or longer than the duration time; and an instruction section 102 for performing any one of the capacity securing processing based on a result of the decision.
