In a welding machine, flexible leads 5 conducting current to a movable welding electrode 6 are protected from weld spatter by a plate 11 supported on a fixed support 1 by a hinge 12 and at its free end movable with but slidable relative to the movable electrode 6. In a flash butt welding machine the hinge 12 is mounted on a transformer 1 to which the leads 5 are connected. The plate 11 is provided with a rod 13 sliding in a forked member 14 attached to the support for the movable electrode 6. Leads 2 connecting the transformer 1 to a fixed electrode 3 are shielded from spatter by a fixed plate 8. The Specification also refers to known flash butt welding machines in which the spatter plates are fixed relative to the respective electrodes or are hinged together. |
