PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a titanium carbonitride powder having predetermined proportions of carbon and nitrogen contents to be used for source powder of cutting tools or the like using a simple method. SOLUTION: A titanium nitride powder satisfying composition formula of TiN<SB>X</SB>(wherein X represents an atomic ratio in the range of 0.4≤X≤0.8), and a carbon powder are mixed and subjected to a high temperature heat treatment in a temperature range of 1,500 to 2,100°C in an atmosphere selected from a nitrogen atmosphere, an argon atmosphere or a vacuum atmosphere to obtain a titanium carbonitride powder having predetermined proportions of carbon and nitrogen contents.
