#CMT# #/CMT# Producing 1,2-propanediol with a purity of at least 98% comprises continuously hydrogenating glycerol in the presence of a heterogeneous copper catalyst to give a glycerol conversion of 95% or less, and distilling the reaction mixture. #CMT# : #/CMT# Independent claims are also included for: (1) producing an ether, ester, amine or urethane compound by producing 1,2-propanediol as above and reacting it with an active hydrogen, epoxy, ester or isocyanate compound; (2) ether, ester, amine or urethane compound produced as above; (3) emulsion produced by contacting an aqueous phase with an organic phase in the presence of an ester compound produced as above; (4) cosmetic composition produced by contacting an emulsion produced as above with a cosmetic component; (5) plastic composition produced by contacting an ether, ester, amine or urethane compound produced as above with a plastic material; (6) drilling composition produced by contacting an ether, ester, amine or urethane compound produced as above with a liquid drilling fluid component; (7) producing a composition by producing 1,2-propanediol as above and contacting it with a mineral oil component, a skin or hair care agent, a nutrient, a pigment, a dye or a surfactant; (8) composition produced as above. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# The 1,2-propanediol is useful as a coolant; for producing ester or ether compounds; as a heat transfer medium; as a hydraulic fluid or a component of a hydraulic fluid; for lowering the freezing point of aqueous phases; as a solvent or plasticizer in coloring products, especially printing inks; as a solvent or additive in detergents; as an animal feed additive; as a humectant in foods and tobacco products; as a formulating component in cosmetic products; as an additive or base component in pumping means (Pumpmittel) or lubricants; as a formulating component of anticorrosion products (all claimed). The ester compounds are useful as emulsifiers or as formulating component for PVC extrusions (claimed). #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# The 1,2-propanediol has a purity of at least 98%. #CMT#CHEMICAL ENGINEERING : #/CMT# Preferred Process: A copper chromite catalyst is used. Hydrogenation is effected in isothermally operated tubular or multitube reactors. Hydrogenation is effected in a trickle bed with cocurrent or countercurrent flow of liquid glycerol and hydrogen. Hydrogenation is effected at 180-220[deg] C. The glycerol has a water content below 2%. The glycerol conversion is 90% or less. The bottoms product from the distillation step is recycled to the hydrogenation step, optionally after purification by filtration or distillation. |
