<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To downsize an automatic transmission while improving the controllability of a clutch. <P>SOLUTION: The automatic transmission includes a normally decelerating planetary-gear set 30 for normally decelerating and outputting the rotation of an input shaft, and a clutch 43 which is provided with a drum 112, a hub 114, a plurality of friction plates 116, a piston 118 for pressing the friction plates, and a hydraulic chamber 120 for controlling the piston. The drum is made up of a cylindrical part 122 bearing the frictional plates, an opening, and a bottom part 124. The piston is held on the bottom inside the cylindrical part of the drum. The hydraulic chamber is formed between the bottom part and the piston. The cylindrical part of the drum and the output member 34 of the normally decelerating planetary gear set are interlocked with each other by an interlocking member 108. The interlocking member is connected to the cylindrical part of the drum between the piston and the frictional plates, and provided with notches at a plurality of positions in the circumference.
