PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner for which unreasonable force is not applied to a traveling roller when a cleaner main body touches an obstacle such as a wall or furniture during self-traveling. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner comprises: the traveling roller 10 provided on the bottom part of the cleaner main body 1; a driving motor 14 for driving the traveling roller 10 so as to move the cleaner main body 1 forward and backward; a hose tensile force detection means 26 for detecting the tensile force of a hose 4 connected to the cleaner main body 1; and a contact detection means 23 for detecting the contact with an obstacle (not shown in the figure) in front of a bumper 21 provided on the outside of the cleaner main body 1. The drive of the traveling roller 10 by the driving motor 14 is stopped while the tensile force of the hose 4 and the contact with the obstacle are simultaneously detected. Since the drive of the traveling roller 10 by the driving motor 14 is stopped when the cleaner main body 1 is brought into contact with the obstacle when a user performs cleaning while pulling the hose 4, unreasonable force is not applied to the traveling roller 10.
