PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve detection precision by reducing erroneous document size detection caused by ON/OFF of a lamp and by making the detection be hardly affected by variations in a light quantity stability property or optical accuracy while the lamp that is a document irradiating means is turned on. SOLUTION: An image reader includes a means for monitoring an image data change in a sub scanning direction and deciding a state of a document; and a means for recognizing a state of a document irradiating means and recognizing the time until the document irradiating means is brought into a state where the document can be scanned. Thus, by providing the means for recognizing the time until the document irradiating means is brought into the state where the document can be scanned, there is the effect such as reduction of a processing time of document scanning including a document size detecting operation or productivity improvement according to a result of the time measurement.
