The method involves sealing an opening of a container (1) while a stamp is pressed on a side of a heat sealing film (2) against an opening edge of the container. The stamp is heated to thermally seal the film with the opening edge. A relative movement between a punching tool (6) and the container is made, so that the punching tool punches the film in an area of the opening, and a sealing plate is separated from the film. The container is released from a restraint (9), and the film is transported for sealing subsequent containers. An independent claim is also included for a device for sealing a container in a food packaging industry.
