PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform excellent focus control even when brightness variation exists. SOLUTION: This imaging device has a first image forming means 3 forming first unit images in every reading cycle based on signals read from an imaging element 2; a detecting means 5 detecting the brightness of the first unit images and detecting brightness variation in a plurality of first unit images; a second image forming means 6 forming second unit images by carrying out amplification processing corresponding to the brightness, to the first unit images when brightness variation exists; and control means 8, 9 generating focus evaluation signals based on the second unit images to carry out focus control. The control means do not use the focus evaluation signals based on the second unit images formed from the first unit images lower in brightness than a specific level, for focus control but use focus evaluation signals based on the second unit images generated from the first unit images higher in brightness than a specific level.
