A plasma display apparatus and a driving method thereof are provided to reduce power consumption and enhance the brightness. A plasma display panel(100) includes an electrode. An image processor(120) performs reverse gamma compensation, an error diffusion, and dithering of an external image signal and outputs the signal. A subfield mapping unit(130) receives an internal image signal from the image processor and maps the internal image signal in original sub fields. A load calculation unit(140) calculates the load corresponding to at least original sub field among mapped overall original subfields. A subfield dispersion unit(150) maps the internal image signal to a plurality of subfields. A data arranging unit(160) rearranges the mapped internal image signal according to the original subfield and the subfield and outputs the final image signal. A scan driver(170) supplies a sustain signal discharging the light. A data driver(180) selects a discharge cell to which the light is emitted by synchronizing the data signal with the scan signal and supplying the data signal to the data electrode. A sustain driver(190) supplies the sustain signal to discharge the light from the discharge cells to the sustain electrode. A controller(200) controls all sections, calculates the timing margin of a frame by receiving the APL from an APL calculator and determines the number of the subfield according to the timing margin. |
