[Also in Division C3] Polymeric monoalkyl tin compounds are prepared by reacting a polymeric monoalkyl stannonic acid of general formula where n is 2-30, a is 0 or is less than n, b is 0 if n is even and is 1 if n is odd, and R is a C 1 -C 18 alkyl group at elevated temperature in an inert solvent with an amount insufficient to break all the oxygen bridges in said polymer of a mercapto compound HSR 1 and/or a carboxylic acid HOOCR 1 , where R 1 is a C 1 -C 20 aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic hydrocarbon group, which groups may be substituted by functional groups. The radical R 1 may be identical or different if both mercapto compound and carboxylic acid are used. Specified compounds are thioglycollic acid isooctyl ester, thiophenol, thiobenzoic acid, lauryl mercaptan, #-mercaptobutyric acid, isooctyl ester, acetic acid, 2-ethylhexoic acid, stearic acid, p-toluic acid, maleic acid monobutyl ester, lauric acid, #-mercaptopropionic acid isooctyl ester. Specified stannonic acid reactants have R=CH 3 , C 4 H 9 , C 8 H 17 , C 12 H 25 , C 18 H 37 , and may be prepared by reacting RSnCl 3 with alkali, e.g. sodium carbonate, in water or water/acetone at 60-90‹ C. The product may be heated with mercapto compound and/or carboxylic acid, in suspension in toluene or xylene, under vacuum to 80-100‹ C. to form the polymeric monoalkyl tin compounds. |
