1361514 Regulating fluid-flow GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 21 June 1972 [2 July 1971] 29088/72 Heading G3H [ Also in Division F2] A fluid-flow control device 20, suitable for use in a solenoid-operated valve 10 for maintaining substantially constant the volumetric flow-rate therethrough, comprises a resilient disc 15 which offers a first set of flow-paths 19a in the form of through-bores 21 and a second set of flow-paths 19b in the form of peripheral recesses 22. Face 27b of the disc, which face lies opposite to a seat shoulder 14, is formed with three by-pass pads 23, 24, 25 which project from a raised annulus 28, the annulus 28 being dimensioned and disposed to form a seal with the seat 14 when the two are brought into contact. The pads are of uniform thickness but of varying cross-sectional area, pad 23 being the smallest and pad 24 the largest. The provision of such pads results in a progressive engagement of the annulus with the seat so as progressively to cut off flow through the recesses 22 until flow is restricted to the bores 21. In modifications, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the disc construction is the same except for the pads which are made of equal cross-sectional area but of different thicknesses in the case, and of equal cross-sectional area and thickness but not equiangularly spaced in the other case. Either modification offers a mode of operation similar to that of the embodiment of Fig. 2.
|
