<p>An industrial gas contg. SO2 and also O2 and/or SO3, is purified by (a) contacting with aq. ammonia and/or neutral ammonium sulphite soln. so as to form NH4 sulphite and sulphate, (b) heating the soln. so as to evaporate some of the water and to decompose the sulphites to SO2 and NH3 with out decomposing the sulphate, (c) heating the remaining liquid phase in the presence of S, H2S, CO, or ammonium thiosulphate so as to convert the ammonium sulphate to SO2 and NH3, and (d) contacting the SO2 and NH3 from (b) and (c) with H2S to produce S. and then sepg. the S, and condensing the vapours and recycling the condensate to step (a).</p> |
