The temp. below the bed of material in the initial upstream part of the heating zone is measured at a series of points distributed over the width of the bed, and increasing the bed thickness in this initial upstream part of the bed in transverse zones corresponding to the points of measurement when the measured temp. are above the pre-determined maximum value and decreasing the thickness when these temps. fall below the predetermined minium value.
