Refinery sludge is deoiled, dewatered and dewaxed by (1) mixing the sludge with a light aliphatic hydrocarbon (pref. a 3-5C alkane), separating the mixt. into water of reduced COD, water-waxy solids slurry and an oil-aliphatic hydrocarbon phase, heating the latter phase to above the critical temp. of the aliphatic hydrocarbon under a pressure to keep the aliphatic hydrocarbon in a dense phase so splitting the oil-aliphatic hydrocarbon phase into aliphatic hydrocarbon and oil portions which are recovered, and (2) separating water from the water-waxy solids slurry, mixing the waxy solids with a light aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. benzene or cumene), separating the resultant mixt. into wax-free solids, and a wax-aromatic hydrocarbon phase and recovering wax from the latter phase. The wax-free solids may be used as land fill, the recovered wax can be decoulourised, and the oil recovered in step (1) is clean and suitable for feeding to a cat cracker or for blending with fuel oil.
|
