A sewing machine for assembling two tubular panty hose portions includes a stitching head, a support table for supporting the hose portions and having a recess in its leading end into which a plate may be inserted. If the portions are to be assembled without a gusset the machine operative holds the portions at predetermined points and allows his thumbs to run up to the base of the recess as the portions are advanced through the stitching head, whereas if the portions are to be assembled with a gusset the plate is inserted into the recess and the operative allows his thumbs to rum up to the edge of the plate. A cutter is provided to longitudinally slit the upper ends of the portions before assembly and thus may comprise an electrically heated wire mounted in the mouth of a suction tube connected to waste. The sides of the suction tube may be slotted to limit the length of the slit produced in the hose portions.
