Cpds. of formula: (I):- (where R1 = H2 or O; R2 = 1-4C alkyl; R3 = O or beta-OX(alpha-Y), where X = H, acyl or an ether gp., and Y = H or 1-6C alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl) are prepd. by dehydration of (II):- while isomerising the 6 beta-Me group, and opt. eliminating the 3-keto gp., pref. by thioketalisation and reduction with alkali metal and liq. NH3, and/or introducing other gps. into posn-17. (I) are novel cpds. with hormonal, esp. ovulation inhibiting, oestrogenic, anabolic and androgenic activity. |
