1321821 Sulphonation of isobutene ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 23 July 1970 [23 July 1969] 37053/69 Heading C2C A process for the sulphonation of isobutene which comprises reacting isobutene with a complex of sulphur trioxide and an ester of an oxy acid of phosphorus using liquid sulphur dioxide as the solvent for the reaction. The process may be carried out as a batch process and the complex of sulphur trioxide with the phosphorus oxy acid ester is formed in situ in the reaction vessel before the introduction of the isobutene. The process may also be carried out on a continuous basis and the complex is formed elsewhere than in the sulphonation reaction vessel. Esters of oxy acids of phosphorus are those of ortho phosphoric or phosphorus acid with aliphatic alcohols having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms or aromatic or alkyl aromatic alcohols such as phenol and benzyl alcohol. Normally it is preferred to employ the triorgano phosphates or phosphites of the formulae (RO) 3 PO and (RO 3 )P respectively, but mono or diorgano compounds of the formulae (RO) 2 P(O)OH, ROP(O)(OH) 2 , (RO) 2 POH and ROP(OH) 2 may also be employed if desired. |
