[Also in Division C3] A germicidal composition for the care of the oral cavity comprises particles of water insoluble plastics material with a size of less than 50 microns, which contain absorbed germicide. Suitable plastics materials are thermoplastic resins, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polymethyl methacrylate and copolymers of polyvinylchloride and polyvinyl alcohol. Germicides may be hexachlorophene, chlorhexidene, tyrothricin, or quaternary ammonium compounds. The composition may be a dentifrice in the form of a liquid, paste, powder, tablets or a solid block, or may consist of a mouthwash; conventional other ingredients for such forms are preferably present. The compositions are prepared by contacting particles of plastics material with a solution of the germicide in a solvent capable of being absorbed by the plastics material, (e.g. propylene glycol, glycerine, cineole, or mixtures thereof), separating the particles from excess solution and, if required, washing with the solvent. 'The absorption is preferably performed at an elevated temperature. |
