<p>871,944. Nuclear reactors. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. July 3, 1959 [Aug. 11, 1958], No. 23026/59. Class 39(4). Nuclear reactor coolant is continuously monitored for excessive radioactivity by a first detector 27. Excess activity causes this detector to operate a valve 25 to block the direct coolant flow to the detector and to pass coolant for a short period through sample pots 21, one for each channel of the reactor. The sample pots are then scanned by a second detector to determine the channel from which the excess activity comes. The first detector may be an I<SP>137</SP> monitor; the second may be a scintillation counter placed at the centre of a circle of sample pots and surrounded by a rotatable shield containing a small window. The sample pots contain baffles to ensure quick changing of the contents.</p> |
