1352521 Applying tear-strips to wrappers MOLESTS Ltd 19 April 1971 [9 Feb 1970] 6030/70 Heading B8C [Also in Division F2] An apparatus for applying a tear-strip to a wrapper web comprises a sun gear 3 fixed to a non-rotatable shaft 4, a planet carrier 5 rotatable about the shaft 4, a first planet gear 9 rotatably mounted on a stub shaft 8 on the planet carrier 5 and meshing with the sun gear 3 and a second planet gear 10 rotatably mounted on a further stub shaft 11 on the planet carrier 5 and a suction wheel 12 eccentrically mounted on and rotatable about the axis of rotation of the second planet gear 10 so that the suction wheel 12 is moved in a substantially rectilinear polygonal path having n sides; the ratio of the diameters of the sun gear 3 and the second planet gear 10 being n : l. Polygonal paths having three, four or more sides are proposed. In the embodiment shown n equals 4 and the centre G of the suction wheel 12 moves in a square path P having sides WX, XY, YZ, ZW. The apparatus also includes a knife 1 for cutting tear-strips 2 from a web of tear-strip material and a platform 13 having a resilient covering 14 over which the wrapper web 15 is guided. Adhesive is applied to the wrapper web 15 from a reservoir 18 by a wick 19 and a pulley 16. In operation a tear-strip 2 is wound on to and held on the suction wheel as it transverses the side WX of the path P and is deposited and adhered to the wrapper web 15 as the suction wheel transverses the side YZ of the path, the suction being cut-off as the suction wheel transverses this side YZ. |
