1344700 Sulphur dioxide from gases BABCOCK & WILCOX CO 18 May 1971 [11 Aug 1970] 15565/71 Heading C1A SO 2 is removed from the combustion gases of a S-containing fuel by (a) cleaning the gases to reduce entrained solid matter, (b) passing the cleaned gases through a MgO suspension thereby producing crystals of hydrated MgSO 3 , (c) heating the crystals to reduce their water of crystallization, (d) pelletizing the crystals with granulated carbon and a binder, (e) heating the pellets to form MgO particles and an SO 2 stream. The flue gases may be cleaned by wetscrubbing. The MgO suspension may also contain 10-50% by wt. Mg(OH) 2 . The granulated carbon may be pulverized coal. The binder may be MgSO 4 produced during wet-scrubbing. The pellets may be heated in a fluidized bed at a temperature of 1200-1800‹ F.
