Disclosed is a low temperature refrigeration process employing the working fluid having at least two components, the process comprising the steps of compressing the working fluid; countercurrently contacting the compressed working fluid in a heat exchanger with one or more returning streams to cool the working fluid; substantially isentropically expanding the cooled working fluid to provide a vapor-liquid mixture; separating the vapor and liquid fractions of the working fluid; returning the vapor fraction through the heat exchanger countercurrently with the working fluid; delivering the liquid fraction to an evaporating zone where it is evaporated to deliver refrigeration; returning the evaporated liquid refrigerant to the heat exchanger and countercurrently contacting it with the working fluid; and combining the returned evaporated refrigerant with the returned separated vapor fraction to comprise the working fluid. Apparatus for carrying out this process is also disclosed, particularly for providing low temperature refrigeration for liquefied natural gas.
