A process for preparing N-acylated novenamine having antibacterial activity comprising contacting novenamine with an acylating agent consisting of a derivative of the desired carboxylic or sulfonic acid in a nitrogen-containing organic base at a temperature of from about -80 DEG C. to about 0 DEG C., and allowing the reaction system to come to ambient temperature.
