Transverse load on pistons resisted by magnetic field - induction coils wound into cylinder walls and piston produce opposing forces to centre piston

The piston is located in a cylinder with an air gap clearance. Two induction coils are located in the composite cylinder block assembly and a further coil is built into the piston assembly. The resulting magnetic fields react against each other so that the piston is centred. Any transverse loads applied to the piston are opposed by the electromagnetic field effect. An alternative method of generating the magnetic field is based upon a number of magnetic coils inserted into the piston and cylinder walls at regular intervals.
