A rubber covered brake pad is provided with an inclined shaft which is positioned in an inclined tube under the car. The tube is inclined forwards and downwards so that the brake shoe is pushed onto the road in the direction of travel A spiral spring pushes the pad onto the rod when the retaining cable is released. The cable release can be coupled to a brake pressure monitor so that the brake operates when the brakes are applied hard. The additional braking force is easily accepted by the car occupants if they are wearing seat belts.
