Refractory material, esp. for steel casting ladles, consists of (I) a major proportion of silica, and (II) Cr2O3, a conc. soln. of a sol. chromium salt, and/or chromium hydroxide, in such an amount that the amount of Cr2O3 in the refractory material is 4-7%, after calcination by the liquid metal.
