The universal stand is for writing implements such as fountain pens and ball point pens, having screw caps and clips, and consists of a back plate with grooves to accommodate the pen cap. The pen is positioned cap down and the cap pushed up so that the clip engages with one of a series of closely spaced channels at the rear of the back plate, thus holding the pen firmly point down. Removal of the pen from the cap is thus easily facilitated. The stand for the back plate has a horizontal tray for small items. The channels are parallel to one another and have uniform spacings.
