Tube prodn. sheet metal blanks on mills - using preliminary measurement of blanks to help eliminate wastage

Pipes a re-produced from sheet metal blanks on a mill by feeding the blanks in a progression following each other, measuring the length of each blank, leaving in the progression pairs of blanks whose differences in length is less than a preset value and removing unpaired blanks to storage where they will be paired up with other unpaired blanks in the progression. The edges of the blanks are then treated to form a half cylinder, the half cylinders are welded together to form pipes and the edges of the pipes are trimmed. There is a reduction in waste metal (trimmings) and the lengths of tubes produced from the same amount of metal can be extended. There is a saving in both floor space for laying the blanks separated out of the sequence and in time, needed to return them into sequence when compiling the pairs.
