This patent relates to a method for the generation of hydrogen, particularly for fuel cells, as well as apparatus for practicing the method. According to the invention, particles of magnesium are reacted with water in the presence of at least one cobalt oxide and at least one water-soluble chloride. Aluminum may advantageously be included with the magnesium.
