Forage mixtures, comprising comminuted juicy or green stuff (e.g. potatoes, turnips, turnip leaves, grass), and at least one material containing starch and/or albumen, which are to be ensilaged, are prepared by passing the mixture through a communiting device as often as is necessary to complete both the comminution of the juicy or green stuff and the mixing thereof with the starch and albumen. A suitable plant employs a common power source to drive both the comminuting device and means for the circulatory movement of the mixture. The comminuting device may be a set of knives which rotate in a plane vertical to the direction of motion of the mixture, which may be effected by means of two opposed screw feeds or by means of the rotation of a circular container. Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) show a preferred device, in which a container 1 rotating about a vertical axis 13 passes the mixture through a set of rotating knives 2. 3 is an ejector device which when lowered ejects the finished mixture via shoot 4. The device may be associated on a suitable carriage with means, such as a weighing conveyer belt, to supply and weigh uncomminuted material, and with means for washing and cleaning turnips prior to use. |
