1406015 Collagen tubes NATURIN-WERK BECKER & CO 16 Feb 1973 [16 Feb 1972] 7739/73 Heading A2B [Also in Division B5] A plastic fibrous composition of animal origin is blow extruded through an annular die having an off-centre mandrel and the extruded tube so obtained is contacted with a concentrated aqueous solution of a salt so as to remove water from said tube and then passed through a drying zone in which it is spirally wound to form a coil, stretching of the tube resulting from the salt treatment being substantially complete before the tube is engaged by any driving element in the drying zone. Common salt solution or solutions of sodium sulphate or ammonium sulphate may be used, sprayed onto the tube, or-the tube may be passed through a bath thereof. Stretching of the tube resulting from the salt treatment is preferably substantially complete before the tube reaches the drying zone. Preferably the tube is contacted with the salt solution immediately after leaving the extrusion die, and subjected to a hardening treatment after drying. In apparatus as shown a collagen tube 2, blow extruded from die 1 having an off-centre mandrel is sprayed with a concentrated solution of common salt from container 3, guide rollers 4 keeping the tube horizontal. The airinflated tube is passed through a looped air blast ring 5 and into a drying tunnel 6 (Fig. 2, not shown) in which it is moved along a spiral path by means of guide rollers. Regulator 7 controls the drive in the tunnel. At the end of the tunnel which is heated by hot air the inflating air is squeezed out by a pair of rollers and the dried casing wound onto a reel. Air blast ring 5 has an annular nozzle through which air is blown on to the tube to remove salt solution. |
