1420088 Pneumatic tyres MICHELIN & CIE (COMPAGNIE GENERALE DES ETABS MICHELIN) 29 Dec 1972 [31 Dec 1971] 60174/72 Heading B7C A radial pneumatic tyre comprises a carcass ply structure 12 having at least one ply of radial or substantially radial cords, e.g. of rayon, steel, polyester or polyamide, and a crown reinforcement having at least two ply structures, each structure comprising at least one ply of parallel cords. The cords of each ply structure are parallel with each other, and the cords of each ply structure are non-parallel with the cords of an adjacent structure. The carcass ply structure and/or each crown reinforcement ply structure satisfies 5 #(T/R) # 15, where T is the product of the force required to break each individual cord (in kilogrammes) and the average number of cords per centimetre of width (taken at right angles to the direction of the cords) of the ply structure, and R is the internal radius (in centimetres) of the tyre at the mid-circumferential plane when the tyre is mounted on a rim, is inflated to its normal pressure, and is unloaded. In the illustrated embodiments, the carcass ply structure comprises a single ply of steel (Fig. 1), or twisted polyamide (Fig. 2), cords; and the crown reinforcement comprises three steel cord ply structures 21, 22, 23. Ply structures 21, 22 make cord angles of 22 degrees with the mid-circumferential plane while the ply structure 23 makes cord angles of 65 degrees with that plane. The maximum thickness of the crown reinforcement is 5 mm. The tread, provided with zigzag grooves 25, has a depth of 16 mm. with the grooves each having a depth of 12 mm. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 three bead cores of steel wires are incorporated in each bead, and in the embodiment of Fig. 2 the carcass ply is turned up around bead cores 4 and extends to points 14, rubber inserts 17 enhance the flexibility of the sidewalls. |
