Shaped ion-exchange catalysts are prepd. by (a) mixing a copolymer of styrene with divinylbenzene or diisopropenylbenzene and thermoplastic material, in ratio by wt. of 1:4-2 (b) extruding the mixt. to shaped elements after heating to the m.pt of the thermoplastic material, (c) treating the elements with a sulphating agent at 20-100 degrees C, and (d) treating twith water. The catalysts are used in hydration of tert. olefins, prepn. of olefins from tert. alcohols, alkylation of phenols with tert. olefins, synthesis and hydrolysis of esters, synthesis of ethers from tert. olefins and lower alcohols, and dimerisation of olefins. Both copolymer and thermoplastic are sulphated, and the catalyst contains no inert material. The catalyst has high activity and can be used at up to 130 degrees C. Corrosion due to de-sulphation is avoided. The exchange capacity may be 4.25 mVal/g. |
