The apparatus calibrates and) or checks tensile testing machinery by bending prismatic samples (14) of concrete. The machine has pads which transmit a strain to a sample placed between them. The sample makes contact with the pads by two of its longitudinally opposite faces. One of these faces makes contact with two internal pads while the other face makes contact with two external (12b, 13b) pads. The distance between the internal pads (12a, 13a) is less than that between the external pads. The external dimensions of the body of the apparatus are identical to those of the sample. One of the longitudinal faces of the body provides a recess in which a measurement cell is placed thus presenting an external pressure pad. The measurement cell may be a dynamometer or strain gauges.
